EMS URGENT PRAYER NEEDS AND FINANCIAL APPEAL

REAL SITUATION OF OUR MISSIONARIES THAT ARE SERVING IN THESE VERSATILE AREAS

EMS of ECWA which is one of the largest indigenous mission agencies in Africa started when the then Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) now Serving in Missions (SIM) saw the need of involving Nigerian indigenes in planting churches across the country and beyond. Therefore, in 1948 a movement began by the name African Missionary Society (AMS) and after ECWA was registered, the name AMS was changed to EMS in 1964.

EMS of ECWA is a faith-based agency as well as a non-profit organization. Presently, EMS has about 1800 missionary couples that are serving in different location in Nigeria and beyond.

SECURITY CHALLENGE

Though many of our EMS missionaries are facing enormous security challenges of attacks from Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram, Bandits and Abductors, yet, they are willing to serve until Jesus takes them home to be with Him; this is at the detriment of their lives.

HEALTH CHALLENGES

Many of our EMS missionaries are facing health challenges of different types because of the nature of the areas they are Many are serving where there is no good drinking water. Recently, many of our missionaries were examined and it was discovered that many have Hepatitis and from 2018, the Head Office spent over 9.1 million Naira on medical treatment alone. We have also lost 5 missionaries in the last 2 years as a result of that.

BRIEF HISTORY OF MISSION/FIELD SCHOOLS

For more than three decades, the education of EMS Missionaries Children became a major issue to the Ministry. In the early sixties, an EMS Children School was built in Wushishi, Niger State and later in Miango Plateau State, but could not survive due to poor funding.

As years passed by, missionaries became more concerned about the plight of their children’s education, and this resulted to the attrition of many missionaries. In 1996, EMS took the challenge to open the EMS Children School in Jos, EMS Children School Lakwame, EMS Children School Kufana, trusting God to help expand the scope, and to reduce the risk of travelling long distances with the insecurity challenge from Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen etc. For there would be no better successors of the missionaries in future than their own children. Praise God that despite the field challenges the missionaries are still in their duty post.

Currently, EMS Children School Jos has about 398 pupils with 40 orphans. It was started to meet the educational need of children of missionaries who are working in Central Region of Nigeria where we have had a lot of insurgency attacks in areas where our missionaries are serving.

EMS Children School Lakwame has about 156 children with 16 orphans. This was started to meet educational need of children of missionaries who are working in the Eastern part of Nigeria where we have the activities of the Boko Haram going on.

EMS Children School Kufana has about 90 pupils with 8 orphans. The school was also started to meet the educational needs of our missionary children whose parents are serving in the core-north of Nigeria where we have a lot of persecution.

EMS Urgent Prayer Needs and Financial AppealThe ongoing Jos campus EMS children school dining hall building project
Therefore, as you pray, we are also appealing for financial support towards the following projects:

  1. For God to provide funds to complete the dining hall building project costing N5, 000,000(N5M) Naira or $14,000 before the rains
  2. To help pay outstanding medical bills of our missionaries costing N 5m to 6m or $14,000 yearly
  3. To help in buying more grains to feed the EMS missionary children in the three schools costing N9m or $25,000
  4. To dig more wells in our mission fields costing N50 to 100 thousand naira per well or $ 300 to 400

Rev. Simon Yako is the Director of EMS of ECWA. He was the Foreign Missions Coordinator
for EMS OF ECWA for almost 31 years beginning in July 1988 in Jos, Plateau Sate Nigeria. Rev. Yako received his Bachelor’s degree in Missions in 1992 and M.A in Missions and Evangelism in 1995 from ECWA Seminary Jos.

Praying on for His Grace and Mercy!

by Joshua and Joanna Bogunjoko | “We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.”Daniel 9:18

Prayer is both marvelous and mysterious. The idea of communicating with the Creator of the universe seems almost ludicrous. And certainly presumptuous. Not to mention intimidating.”

This statement by Lori Hatcher on Crosswalk.com is so true as we await being able to travel to Kenya for an SIM Healthcare Conference and Leadership Initiative due to the uncertainties surrounding the Hurricane Florence. The organizers and some of the participants are already there but some of us are still in the US watching the turn of events in the wake of Hurricane Florence. We have had to change our flights a couple of times and are hoping that Joshua can leave on Saturday while Joanna follows on Tuesday. Joel is home from school as the University of South Carolina campus is closed and classes are cancelled through Monday. They anticipate resuming normal operations on Tuesday pending government direction. We are praying and eagerly anticipating God answering the prayers of many to protect lives and properties. Please pray along with us!

Thank you so much for praying for us and especially Joel and Jochebed as you read about them in our last prayer letter. Many of you responded with words of encouragement, prayers and great generosity. Joel started the semester well and with a great outlook for which we are thankful. He is happier and is more positive about his classes. Please continue to pray that God will perfect what He has started. Also remember to continue praying for the appeal that we sent for his scholarship as the decision making/proceedings have now started. We are still waiting for their response.

Jochebed moved to a new 1 bedroom apartment from a studio apartment in a bad part of town and is settling in well. She is as busy as ever and we appreciate prayers for strength, wisdom and success in all her endeavors and give thanks for her safety while she lived at her old place.

We were in International Leadership Team and Board of Governors’ meetings during the last two weeks. The two meetings went well and everyone has returned to their destinations safely. Praise God with us for unity that was evident as they met and deliberated on issues affecting SIM. Pray that God will establish all He has helped them to decide upon.

Pray for the SIM Healthcare Conference and Leadership Initiative starting on September 16 in Kenya and that all will go well.

We will take a week of rest/holiday after the conference and then go on to the Philippines for SIM Philippines Spiritual Life Conference (SLC). Please pray that God will speak through Joshua as he will be speaking both in Kenya and in the Philippines. Pray that God will meet everyone at their point of need.

Thank you for always being there for us in prayers and for your support.

Convinced that no one should live and die without hearing God’s good news, we believe that He has called us to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in communities where He is least known.

Joshua and Joanna Bogunjoko

EMS OF ECWA 2014 Widows Seminar

[portfolio_slideshow id=1588]

Our annual 2014 EMS Widows seminar  just ended and 53 widows attended.

by Rev Stephen Panya Baba

Just before we started the seminar session, I received call from a supporting mother (herself a widow) who gave N200,000 (two hundred thousand naira) for the widows without her knowing about the seminar and that I was right with the widows at the seminar!  Talk of the Spirit moving! The widows  were specially encouraged with the good news of the support that came in.

Also, another woman gave brand new wrappers gifts to the widows. The widows were greatly encouraged, they prayed, wept and signed up for chain prayer and fasting for EMS of ECWA Missionaries, staff and supporters.

Thanks for your concern, love and support for EMS Missionaries' Widows and God bless you all.

To God be the glory!

Your Preacher of the Word

EMS OF ECWA Widows Seminar in 2011

by Bill Foute

Thirty-eight EMS widows met for mutual encouragement in Jos from August 1 to 5 in 2011. (EMS is ECWA's missions arm, sending Nigerian missionaries to work in unreached areas inside and outside the country. At the moment, more than 1,200 missionaries are working in Nigeria, Benin Republic, Cameroun, Chad, Ghana, Niger Republic and Togo.)

Some of the widows have been widowed for 20 or more years. Others lost their husbands this year, including two whose husbands were martyred for Christ. One husband died while bringing his son back to the EMS school in January. Another, Isma Dogari, was killed and his body burned in Bauchi in April. All told, eight husbands had been killed through motorcycle or car accidents, one died of snake bite, one drowned, three were killed as a result of persecution, and the rest died of various illnesses. Fourteen of the 38 widows have their own farms, 24 have their own home, while the rest pay rent.

During the workshop, several presenters encouraged the widows from God's word. They also worked through the trauma healing workshop. Each one shared her painful journey and was prayed for by the group. Behind the scenes, they encouraged each other so that the feeling of isolation and that no one cares melted.

This was the first time EMS has gathered their widows for such a workshop, a fact that did not go unnoticed by the ladies. They were very very appreciative of EMS for this effort. Fiona Crook's mother, a British physician, along with Miriam Singer and Katie Moore, gave medical exams as well.

One of our personal highlights was when some of the ladies performed dramas. One drama focused on the role of the widow helping her children by listening to their problems. It was a touching moment when the mother lovingly embraced her daughter after she confessed she was pregnant out of wedlock. Another highlight for us was the closing ceremony when many tears were shed as the ladies released some of their sadness, hurts, anger and frustration to Jesus. They wrote these on slips of paper, nailed them to a cross and then removed and burned them.

During the workshop God was at work in other hearts as well. In response to Internet updates by the EMS Director with stories of what was going on in the workshop, people began to respond with monetary assistance. One donor is taking on the support of 15 EMS widows at about $35 each monthly. EMS has been giving their widows this stipend since January. Another donor gave money for each widow to receive a sewing machine. When these gestures were announced the ladies burst into singing and dancing!

The widows were asked about help in the future. They listed such things as vocational training such as how to make soap, lotion, caring for goats and chickens, farming and tailoring. They would love a field trip to the zoo, and they welcome visitation from EMS and SIM. They want help with dealing with their youth. Farming is important to many of them and they would welcome gifts of fertilizer! Several said they'd like to continue to serve as missionaries with EMS as widows.

The widows face problems with relatives, lack of support, serving communion, and being misunderstood by pastors' wives. One of the most difficult issues they face is their husband's relatives who often take everything they own, including the kids, after the husband dies (this is customary in most of Nigeria). Several widows come from Muslim homes or their husbands came from Muslim homes. These are pressured to marry Muslim relatives and bring their children up under Islam.

It was humbling and a privilege to facilitate in the healing process with these precious ladies of faith. EMS hopes to continue to bring them together in future years for further training and encouragement. We know some EMS widows were not in attendance, but we hope they can attend next time.

EMS Project Summary & The Associated Needs

[portfolio_slideshow id=1302]

by Rev Stephen Panya Baba

Thanksgiving

With your prayer , physical and financial support, the Lord enabled us last year to further push ahead for the advancement of His Kingdom.  What we do share with you from time to time are just highlights of major events. A more detailed and perfect record is being kept by the Lord Himself in heaven. Its being kept  for our blessing here on earth and reward in eternity in heaven.

Thank you so much and we pray  that the Good Lord will continue to be with you all.

Special Need for Prayer

Those of you that are well acquainted with EMS of ECWA Missions work know it is a very highly sacrificial service,  that requires very special calling, even within our Nigerian context of generally  low standard of living.

Furthermore,  we discovered during  our maiden Missionaries retirees seminar which took place 21st -24th October 2013 that, out of the 34 EMS Missionary retirees, 22 are on ECWA pension scheme while 9 are receiving nothing. Of those that are receiving pension, the highest paid is 9,000 (Nine thousand naira) per month while the least paid  receives as low as N650 (Six hundred and fifty  naira) per month! Most others receive  on average between N2,000 (two thousand) and N5,000 (five thousand naira) per month as pension. This is of course very clearly inadequate.

While thanking God for some of them who have children who are helping them out in old age,  a number of them clearly need help.

EMS is taking responsibility  and has budgeted for hosting the retirees Missionaries get together which is now an annual event. We are  however needing to raise additional funds that we can use to help the retirees missionaries at this stage of their old age. This year, our target is N2.5m (Two million, five hundred thousand naira only) and has been added to our Projects as No. 20. We would be grateful that you help us pray towards meeting this need.

Amazing Grace

Most, if not all of you, have been aware of the terrible attacks of Christians by the Muslim Boko Haram Movement in Northern and Middle Belt Regions of Nigeria. Of recent, there has been a very vicious onslaught of Christians and the church in Yobe State of Nigeria. Concerned about the situation there, the EMS North East Regional Coordinator, Rev Zaka Maji, was asked during our monthly management meeting last Tuesday how the missionaries were fairing in Yobe and if any has had to be evacuated from his mission station because of the attacks and danger to their lives and families.

The Regional Co-ordinator responded that all of the missionaries were at their various stations, God has so far graciously protected them and none has left . Furthermore, he said it was actually the missionaries who were the ones encouraging him to stand firm. The missionaries told him that they were trusting the Lord for support and protection and infact were ready to pay the price with their lives if that be the Lord’s will.
To our greatest surprise, against all odds, the Yobe Church was able to raise funds and pay for all its 9 (nine) missionaries last month. If you know the severe persecution that the Yobe Brethren are experiencing today, you would know that this is a miracle. Our missionaries’ stand and this miracle of provision through faithful severely persecuted Christian Brethren in Yobe state, who are literally living under siege of the devil, cannot be anything but the AMAZING GRACE OF GOD.

We in EMS are totally humbled by the testimony of the Yobe Mission Field. Please join us in praising and thanking GOD FOR HIS AMAZING GRACE.
We urge you to continue to pray for these dedicated servants of God and their families and for all these faithful Brethren in Yobe State and the entire Yobe Church leadership and members. Pray that God will fill them with power to continue to be His bold witnesses in the most dangerous circumstances just as in Acts 45:23 -31.

Pray that God would comfort our Yobe Brethren who have lost their loved ones, some brutally killed right in from of their wives and family members because they would not renounce Christ or simply bear His name -Christians.

Pray for the protection of Church leaders and for them to stand firm in the present most difficult and trying times. Indeed continue in prayer for all EMS Missionaries and Brethren living and laboring in various challenging Missions Fields in the world.

Remain in His abundant Grace.
Rev Stephen Panya

Christmas 2012

Christmas 2012 is all upon us, we at ECWA USA wish you and yours a joyous, safe and Merry Christmas

Preparing For The Last Christmas!
By Stephen Baba Panya, Director of EMS
(This can also be accessed with other articles at www.emsofecwa.org)

In this spiritual and theologically muddled up world, where anything perceived to be negative is outrightly rejected, many believers seeing this topic would begin to ‘reject it in Jesus name’. Preparing for the Last Christmas would spoil the joy of celebration for many because it connotes saying bye to this world which many professed Christians, urged on by prosperity preaching, have unfortunately come to love with all their heart, soul and strength, instead of God. May God in His grace and mercy, restore the first love we had for Christ, when we first heard His pure undiluted gospel in Jesus name! In any case beloved of God, let your heart be at peace, the Last Christmas is not talking about your last Christmas celebration on earth ( although it could well be! ). The last Christmas is certainly not talking about your impending death ( I suspect a great relief for many!). However, the Last Christmas is about something much more serious .

Christmas is when we remember the coming of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ to this world and it is traditionally celebrated by most Christendom on the 25th of December of every year. The Last Christmas the world should be preparing for is not the traditional Christmas celebration of 25th December, it is the second coming of Christ Jesus and this can take place on, before or after 25th December 2012! Are you prepared? If you are, how prepared are your loved ones and others in the world?

The Last Christmas will be totally different from the First Christmas in so many ways. In the first Christmas, the Lord Jesus came into this world humbly, quietly, as a helpless Baby in Bethlehem under the care of His earthly parents. At the Last Christmas , the Lord Jesus shall come in power and glory, with the saints triumphant and His mighty angelic host. In the first Christmas, He came as the Sacrificial Lamb of God, to die on the cross of Calvary for our sins, that all those who believe in Him shall be saved from their sins and eternal death in hell fire when they die. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life ( John 3 :16). At the last Christmas, the Lord Jesus shall come as the Lord and Judge of this world, to seperate the sheep form the goats, believers in Him and non-believers in Him. Believers shall enter into eternal paradise to dwell with God for ever and ever in heaven, while unbelievers in Him shall be separated to eternal hell fire where they shall enter into unending pain, suffering and sorrow with the devil and his demons. For it is appointed unto man to die but once and after that comes judgment ( Hebrews 9:27).

The Last Christmas would therefore be a big celebration of abundant and unending bliss of life for true believers in Christ but unfortunately, it would be the beginning of eternal pain, suffering and sorrow for majority of the people of world today that have rejected the Lordship of Christ or are yet to hear about the first Christmas, that Christ came and died to save them from the sins.

As a watchman, God told prophet Ezekiel, “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself( Ezek 33:7-9).

Those that have heard and rejected the gospel would account for themselves on that great day of judgment, but we believers as watchmen of God, are responsible for those that are yet to hear the gospel, or sufficiently enough to make a decision for or against Christ.

The end purpose of Missions is to help everyone in this world, both present and future generations if the Lord tarries, to prepare for the Last Christmas. As you celebrate Christmas this year, remember that many are yet to hear about the first Christmas. How then can they prepare for the Last Christmas? God has squarely placed this responsibility on us. Let us Pray, Let us Give and Let Us go to proclaim Jesus Saviour and Lord to the utmost part of the world. The Lord Jesus is the only hope of this earth. Missions is our God given responsibility. Let us therefore, by His grace and power , work together to prepare the people of this world for the Last Christmas, so that it would be a joyful celebration for as many as possible and not a day of pain, sorrow and gnashing of teeth. Have a blessed Christmas and New Year in Advance, if the Lord tarries!
