A former IRS official will not be charged for any possibly politically motivated actions regarding the tax-exempt status of members of the tea party conservative group or for obstructing justice. The U.S. Justice Department Friday said it would not charge Lois Lerner, closing its investigation into whether the IRS targeted members of the tea party, CNN reported.

"We found no evidence that any IRS official acted based on political, discriminatory, corrupt, or other inappropriate motives that would support a criminal prosecution," wrote Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik in a letter to Congress according to CNN.

Lerner, who was director of the IRS' Exempt Organizations unit, was at the center of a controversy two years ago in which an audit said some IRS personnel singled out members of the tea party who applied for tax-exempt status, the Associated Press reported.
