THEME: Wife’s Obedient to Her Husband

TOPIC: The Wife’s Desire Shall Be to Her Husband

Genesis 3: 16- 21

Rev. (Dr.) Stephen K. Awoniyi

INTRODUCTION

In reference to First Corinthians Chapter 11: 1-16, the Bible says,

                    1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
                        Head Coverings

2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions       just as I delivered them to you.  3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.  4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.  5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.  6 For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.  7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.  8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man.  9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.  10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.  11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord.  12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.

13 Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head       uncovered?  14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?  15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her[a] for a covering.  16 But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God (1 Corinthians 11:1-16 (NKJV).

Not Carnality but Christ
1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.  2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.  3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.  6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.  9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

Character of the New Man

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.  14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.  15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.  16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him (Colossians 3:1-17 (NKJV).

  1.  The Responsibility of Women

What does the phrase “The Responsibility of Women” really mean?  It means, Women are commanded to be sober, to love, to be good and obedient to their husbands, their children, and to be keepers at home.  That is, the word of God will not be accomplished unless this is done faithfully and honestly.  The Book of First Peter could also be narrated thus;

Submission to Husbands

1 Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.  3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—  4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.  5 For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,  6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

A Word to Husbands

7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to   the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

Called to Blessing

8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;[a]  9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.  10 For “He who would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit (1 Peter 3:1-10 (NKJV).

Beyond a shadow of doubt, the Scripture emphasizes that women ought to obey their husbands.   Be assured that there is no any hint in the Scripture that says a wife may have to or should choose between conflicting authorities.  That is, a woman ought to obey her husband regardless of her husband’s spiritual conflict or condition.

The Scripture continues by saying,

23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall    become one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed (Genesis 2: 23-25 (NKJV).

CONCLUSION

Dearly beloved, when a man marries a wife, the man is free from the authority of his parents because he becomes more committed to his beloved wife.  That is why the Scripture says, “Therefore, shall a man leave his father and his mother, and, shall cleave unto his wife” Genesis 2: 24.  This means, the wife and the husband become responsible directly to the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ.   How committed are you for the Lord’s duty?  Are you sure you are very faithful, committed, obedient, and honest to it?  If yes, to God be the glory and devote yourself more to that mission, please.  But if no, when will you be obedient to God’s mission?  Give it a second though, please!
