Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right Eph. 1:6. This command affects everyone as we are all children of our parents and children of God. We detest authority in our days, but we cannot run away from it. Young people look forward to attaining adulthood and stepping out of parental control. This desire is a myth because these young people will still be under the authority of their lecturers, coaches of their games, supervisors at their part-time jobs, landlords, pastors, etc.
Obedience to those given authority over us is God’s order to all except when we are required to do something contrary to His will. Jesus said: The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach (Mat. 23:2-3). As long as the person over you is telling you the right thing to do, even if he is a hypocrite, God requires you to obey. It is God you are obeying because their authority comes from Him.
