Since the beginning of time women, especially mothers, have mastered the art of multi-tasking. We salute them. The emergence of smart phones, computers and other devices have created a generation of young people that are amazing at multi-tasking. Try talking to your kids while they are playing computer games, they will respond to all your questions in an insightful way without stopping the game.
We may be a good multi-tasker, but Jesus’ statement here puts a limit. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:13. Young people may consider Jesus’ statement outdated since all they know is multi-tasking and they are good at it. Jesus declared that the pursuit of money and pursuit of God are not two parallel tracks going in the same direction to the same destination; rather, they are two tracks going in opposite directions to two different destinations. Money and God are two masters with two different agendas.
Summarizing a sermon I heard Dr. Erwin Lutzer preached:
Money promises you the same things God promises you. But the reality is that money cannot give you true peace, satisfaction and eternal life.
Do not multi-task your devotion to God with devotion to making money. God is a jealous God and will not share you with another god. Jesus’ statement is true, don’t excuse it.
