AHTANUM, Wash.- Yakima County search and rescue teams (SAR) said a 66-year-old man died after his snowmobile rolled on top of him yesterday; trapping him in deep snow.

Crews said the man was near a tree well, which is a pocket of deep snow around trees, when he slid into and was trapped by almost six feet of snow and his vehicle.

People with the man tried digging him out and reviving him with CPR, but were unable to bring him back.

Rescue teams got there around noon and were able to dig out his body before turning it over to the coroner’s office.

Yakima county search and rescue is holding off on releasing the name until more of the family is notified.

SAR wants to remind people to be careful when out in the snow, especially when going off trail.
